How to Prep Kids for a Fall Family Session
Simple prep can lead to a smoother, happier photo day.
Tips for Prepping Kids for Your Family Session
As a family and newborn photographer in Nutley, New Jersey, I know that one of the biggest parts of a successful family session is helping kids feel comfortable, confident, and excited from the start. The good news? A little preparation goes a long way.
Here are my favorite tips to help your children have a happy, smooth, and fun family photo session:
1. Talk about the session in a positive way
Kids pick up on your energy, so keep the conversation light and exciting. Let them know they get to spend time with their family, have fun, and be photographed by someone who loves capturing real smiles and genuine connection. Avoid making it sound like a big performance or something they need to “get right.”
2. Choose outfits that feel comfortable
Comfort matters just as much as style. When kids feel good in what they’re wearing, they’re more likely to relax and enjoy themselves. Soft fabrics, flexible fits, and coordinated colors always photograph beautifully while still allowing little ones to move, play, and be themselves.
3. Keep schedules simple before your session
If possible, try not to overload your child’s day with too many activities right before photos. A rested, well-fed child is usually a much happier participant. A calm lead-up to your session can make a huge difference in the mood and energy of the whole family.
4. Bring snacks and water
Little ones get hungry fast, and snacks can be a lifesaver during a family session. Choose mess-free options if possible, and bring water to keep everyone refreshed. A quick snack break can be just the thing to reset a tired or wiggly child.
5. Let kids be kids
Some of the sweetest images happen when children are free to laugh, run, twirl, cuddle, or explore. I love capturing the natural connection between your family, so there is no need for your kids to sit still or pose perfectly the entire time. Playful moments often make the most memorable photos.
6. Arrive a little early
Giving yourself extra time helps everyone settle in without feeling rushed. When parents feel relaxed, kids usually do too. A calm arrival sets the tone for a smoother, more enjoyable session.
7. Trust the process
Every child is different, and that’s exactly what makes family photography so special. Whether your little one is shy, silly, energetic, or a mix of everything, I know how to work with their personality to capture beautiful, authentic moments. My goal is always to create images that reflect the real love and connection in your family.
8. Focus on the experience, not perfection
The best family photos come from real moments, not perfect behavior. If your child needs a break, a cuddle, or a little extra time to warm up, that’s completely okay. Your session is about celebrating your family exactly as you are right now.
