Planning For Fall Family Photos in Bergen County, New Jersey

I have to admit.. Fall here in Bergen County, New Jersey is magical. Mother Nature sure knows how to show off! We have reached that time of year where we're all buzzing with excitement about capturing the beauty of fall foliage in our family photos. So, let's dive into all the things to help you plan for your 2024 Fall Family Photoshoot (don’t worry.. I am here to help you every step of the way!)

Why choose Fall for your family photo session?

I think it's the best time of year weather-wise and the timing of the sunset. When I schedule Fall Portrait Sessions they are in October through early November. That time of year yields for comfortable temperatures.. plus when you layer with cardigans, sweaters or a light jacket you will still be cozy even if it is slightly chilly.

Another reason Fall is a great option for family photos is the timing of the sunset! All of my outdoor sessions take place during Golden Hour.. this is approximately one and half hours to two hours before sunset or sunrise if that's your thing! This is the most flattering light of the day.. how can you beat that golden glow?! During this time of year, the sun sets at a reasonable time that won't disrupt your kiddos dinner and bedtime routine. I'm all about convenience, so this is a bonus!

Where is the best spot for Fall family photos?

When it comes to fall foliage, location is key. We want to look for spots that really show off the gorgeous colors and have the best light, too. In Bergen County, Essex County and Morris County the options are pretty endless! Skylands Manor, Ramapo Reservation, Cross Estate Gardens and Verona Park are just to name a few!

Depending on the vibe you are going for.. your go-to photographer.. AKA me.. will know which location to recommend that fits your family best! I consider the ages of your children, how far you are willing to travel and your wall art goals!

What to wear to your Fall family photos?

This part of the session process is so much fun and will help bring your portraits to life! The thing that's in right now are neutral color palettes. I'm not saying that's the only way I style my clients but it does offer a great way to keep it simple and not clash with the organic, warm colors of nature that is around you.. the yellows, oranges and reds.

If you love a pop of color, the colors I love to incorporate are blues, purples and maroon. All of these are accompanied with other neutrals but they really photograph well among the foliage!

I also love mixing patterns. I'm the first to admit that I love wearing a cozy flannel during the colder months. But, I don't think more than one person in your family should wear a flannel to your photo session. It's best for just one person to rock the flannel pattern.. not two-three people. If your son is wearing a flannel button down, adding in a small more subtle pattern for yours or your daughter's dress will look great!

Lastly, I love incorporating texture! When I think of textures in clothing I think of cardigans, sweaters and pants. There are some families who aren't a fan of patterns so instead of everyone wearing solid colors and it looking a little boring, we'll mix it up by having someone wearing a textured sweater while dad is wearing a smooth henley tee. Ruffles in dresses or blouses are a beautiful option and I love that it adds some movement in your photos.. because if you can't tell already, I don't have you sit still for an hour for your photoshoot!
