How to Prepare Your Children for a Newborn Session

Are you an expecting parent who wants to schedule a Newborn Session with me but nervous that your older kids won't cooperate?  You are not alone!  This is such a common concern for parents but I can promise you with the steps below we will have a beautiful session that everyone will enjoy!

Getting Them Excited for Photos

At home, you can definitely talk up the session to them to help get them excited.  But for me, when I get there.. I engage with the big kids first.  This helps them feel included and at ease with meeting me for the first time.  My go-to's are usually asking them to show me their favorite toy or showing me their room.  Showing interest in what they love creates a connection and trust that will come through in the photos.

Involve Them in the Process

Include your older kids in preparations for the newborn session. Let them help choose outfits and even select music for the session!  It's a tough adjustment for kids when a new baby comes along. This involvement can help them feel more connected to the session.

Discuss What to Expect

Talk to your children about what a newborn session entails. Explain the purpose and importance of the photos, describing how these moments are a way to treasure their baby's early days. Remind them that the session will include both the newborn and them, highlighting how they will play a special role.

Practice Gentle Touch

Remind your older kids about the gentle way they should hold or interact with the new baby. You can even practice with a doll or stuffed animal to help them understand how to be careful.  I've run into scenarios where that session was the first time the big brother or sister held their baby brother and that can cause a little bit of anxiety for parents and children.  Be sure to practice ahead of time so they are used to it and comfortable.

Set Expectations for Behavior

Discuss with them how they need to behave during the session. Going over things like being calm, taking turns, and listening to the photographer's directions can help them understand the importance of the moment.

Take Breaks When Needed and Starting With Them First

Let your older children know that it’s okay to take breaks during the session if they start to feel overwhelmed or bored. Make sure they understand that their feelings are valid and taking a moment to recharge is perfectly acceptable.

I prefer to start the session with photos that include older siblings first that way they are done first and can play sooner rather than later.

Highlight Their Role

Remind your kids how special it is to be an older sibling!  Emphasizing their role in the family and how their new baby brother or sister will look up to them can boost their pride and involvement during the session :)
